How to Find Work at Home Writing Jobs

Freelance Telecommuting Gigs

One of the benefits of being an essay writer freelance is the ability to work from home. Here are some ways to find telecommuting jobs.

Many freelancers dream of the day they can walk to their office down the hall of their home. Telecommuting has become more popular over the last few years, but finding these type of dream jobs isn't always easy. With a few simple strategies, however, writers can land that telecommute job they have always wanted. Here are some tips to help find the best work-at-home writing jobs available.

Freelance Writing Job Boards

Any type of site that lists jobs will have freelancer opportunities as well. Websites like Indeed and Simply Hired are great ways to narrow a job search. Writers can place their ideal job title in the search box (such as "writer" or "blogger") and look through a list of coveted jobs from a variety of organizations. Here are a few other places writers can check:

  • Writemyessay.nyc - lists daily jobs of all sorts.

  • Journalism Jobs.com - lists jobs for reporters and other media personnel.

  • Media Bistro.com - lists top paying jobs for magazines, television, and online media sites.

  • Freelance Job Openings.com - lists of collection of jobs, some low paying and some great telecommuting jobs.

  • Online Writing Jobs.com - pulls leads mainly from Craigslist.

  • Kijiji.com - has a variety of telecommute and writer opportunities.

  • Dice.com - lists a variety of mainly technical writer positions.

  • UsaJobs.gov - lists a combination of technical and staff writer positions.

It's up to the freelancer to sort through these jobs to determine which leads might be the best option for them.

Ask for a Telecommuting Position

Nearly any freelance writing job can be turned into a telecommute position. Some companies are not comfortable at first about having a consultant work from home, but it's worth taking some time to negotiate this. Writers interested in working from home should arm themselves with facts and figures on the benefits of telecommuting, especially as it applies to the company.

For example, if writers can show the company how a telecommute arrangement would help them be more effective (i.e., increased flexibility means more creativity, lack of commute is better for the environment, working from home would actually increase productivity) then an employer would probably be open to giving it a try. Writers should go out of their way to show how this arrangement can work well for all parties concerned.

Proposing a New Work From Home Position

Sometimes a company needs a writer's expertise, yet they simply don't know it yet. Writers should study companies that might be lacking in their particular area of knowledge, and propose a telecommute job position with them. For example, if a writer happens to notice a company's half-hearted attempt at using Facebook, or an out-of-date webpage, these could be areas where the writer can help. I'm sure an experienced writer can write an essay for me.

Writers who ask to work on a freelance or consultant basis have several benefits they can recite to the potential employer, such as savings on health benefits, office supplies, and vacation time. Additionally, tools such as Skype (for instant message and teleconferencing), email, and phone can make a telecommuter feel as if he or she is working in the office along with everyone else.

Unless face-to-face time is a requirement to do the job effectively, writers could easily propose a new freelance arrangement that allows them to stay home. The last few years many more employers have agreed to telecommute positions, and writers are prime candidates for this type of work.
