CLUBHOUSE CREATIVITY

I have been a member of my local camera club for many years. We were the first photographic club in the country to have a purpose built premises. Many sessions were spent there endeavouring to come up with original images. The following gallery includes some of the results. Apart from the routine portrait and still life evenings, some very original techniques evolved through patience, creativity and in many cases just pure chance. Some of the techniques we used were as follows

1 – Colorvir - This involved immersing black and white prints in a variety of dyes to gain weird and wonderful effects – well sometimes at least!! (Images 1-5)

2. The Third Image - In the early 90’s we began to experiment with creating a ‘third image’. This involved projecting 2 images from two separate AV projectors onto a screen and then photographing the result - a montage of a different kind you might call it. Filters were often put in front of one or both lenses for additional fun. (Images 6 - 11)

3 – Tracing Paper Screen - We also made use of a different type of projection screen which was made up of architect’s tracing paper in a wooden frame. The advantage of this was that it was transparent. Hence, manipulated images could be beamed through it and all sorts of objects placed in front of it. Photographs could then be taken from the other side.(Images 12 - 19)

4 – Tin Foil - Of course you can project an image on to anything, not just a screen. We also used the less shiny back of tin foil, which had been crumpled up slightly. (Images 20 - 21)

5 - The remainder of the gallery comprises more conventional still life images.

Footnote - Most of this activity took place just as Photoshop was emerging. In those early days it was sort of frowned upon to be seen to be using Photoshop. We found that in inter club competitions, other clubs just thought we were using PS to create these images whereas in fact none of us knew anything about it - how times have changed!
