1982-84: Remember standing on the Peak watching the planes turning right at the big checkerboard at Kowloon Tong before their final descent into Kai Tak. No other airport like it in the world.

Classic Hong Kong View. I must admit I agree that old Hong Kong had something special. The quirky mix of east and colonial west I think, but it was an incredible place.

I lived next to Buxy Lodge ( spelling ? ) when the kotewall disaster happened

do you remember the guy/pic being knocked out of his bed and falling 12 floors into the mud due to the impact of having the top 2 floors removed and lived

Stonecutter's Island (on the left) is still an island. To be fair, the skies in 1980 were not all that clear - see the smoke stacks across on Kowloon? Mind you, China was not pumping out quite as much pollution in those days ...

This picture was taken in August 1980. The mud slide from Kotewall road was in 1972.

You still get this view through a gap in the trees - I took this same angle last year - IFC and central is out of shot to the right. The Sai Ying Pun building with the ball on top would be in the middle. Is this taken before 1972 when Kotewall mansions slid down the hill - if so - could it be that green building on the bottom?

looking at this pictures, makes me sad somehow. Just knowing that the harbour gets smaller everytime I go back. It seems bias of me, but I really do like old hong kong better. There is just something about it that present day Hong Kong just doesn't have.

This was taken from half way up Hatton Road. Compare with "Hong Hong Revisited 2005 & 2006" gallery 1st image on page 7 taken from the same spot 25 years later.
