My Grandfather, Shenyang, China, 2005

One of the enjoyable things about returning to my home town is to see my grandpa. He is a very kind, optimistic old man who appreciates every little thing in life. Even a simple meal, such as this one, makes him very happy. Life has never been easy for him. The peace and affluence of his life today is something he always dreamed about. No wonder he looks as happy as a king!

Joy from the bottom of his heart. This is something that cannot be pretended. Jennifer, not the meal, but seeing you gives him this kind of happiness.

****A beautiful portrait. You use a wideangle very well here. The closeup wideangle distortion emphasizes the hands, and makes them larger than life, and this image is all about those wonderful hands. He seems to seems to almost gesturing to us with both the bowl and the chopsticks. It is more about sharing than eating. He is giving himself to us and we give ourselves to him. The reason it work so well as a portrait is the intimacy it brings to this moment of sharing. Since the subject is your own grandfather, you can generate a sense of intimate familial pleasure from him that you then transmit to us.
