Shuangshuang, Heifei, China, 2004

I made this picture for Shuangshuang. She always has a beautiful smile on her face, as if nothing can upset her. She is excited about life. She wants to discover as much as she can about both past and present. The boy who standing quietly behind her is her younger brother. Her family's loving support makes a huge contribution to Shuangshuang's life.

I think this is one of my favorute photos that you have made Jen. It is really so wonderfully composed, it enhances the meaning of it. the refelctionion the care, the contrast. It all works together. You are very talented Jen. I will stop by from time to time.

Very moving image. Wondefull connection between humanity, new technology and history, well defined image that tells the story.
Very well done.

I forgot to mention the incongruity in scale here that helps makes this picture work. Beautifully composed, Jen. You use the wideangle lens masterfully here to anchor the image with the vehicle, and place it in the corner, where it can thrust into the frame as an energetic, massive diagonal. It is large, the people are small. The reflection is wonderful, because it ties the people to the vehicle in the center of the picture, just as the building in the background ties them to the vehicle at top of the picture. It is one of your cleanest, simplest, most moving images. All that space defines a world that is open to this handicapped person, not closed. A positive environmental portrait that tells a story, and does so well. You are truly a compassionate, remarkable story teller.

A journalistic image, this works much better in black and white than it did in sepia, which did nothing but obscure its meaning.

Motocar and wheelcar, another nice kind of "reflection" as well.
