Detail of veneer 'caulking' (9787)

Cropped image of deck planks with veneer 'caulking'. This is with little sanding with too coarse a grit of paper. I expect (hope? :) ) it will look better when all completed and sanded down with fine cabinet grade sanding paper and varnished with a varnish that will darken it ever so lightly...

Try rubbing a soft pencil on the side, for me it works very well. Then with a very hard pencil, put in the nail.

Ya know Andrew, I think you will probably end up with a fairly authentic deck, but with the scale I'm working with, practically twice the scale so half the size, me thinks I'm gonna experiment with a blank first. I was thinking maybe laying down the planks, staining to a darker colour, varnishing, then with an exacto trace the edges with minute gouges and run some dark putty into the grooves. I'll experiment with this for effect. I think the results might match, authenticity may suffer a little. I also like what you say about "even though this will be hidden under the main deck, it will be viewable through hatches et al".
