Yucca Blossoms
This Yucca tree in our front yard always blooms in late August and early September when the weather is hottest, which is very different from most trees.
The tree grows sprouts at an amazing rate which come out of the trunk and branches, and that need to be cut away on a monthly basis.
The edges of the leaves can easily cut skin and the tips can puncture it. They can not be used as compost, so we can not put them out with our garden trash for pick up.
Yucca come in nearly fifty varieties and are native to the Americas and very common in Southern California, among them the well known Joshua Tree.
By the way, the flowers are supposedly edible, but I've never tired them. The flowers in the photo are at least thirty feet off the ground and therefore out of stepladder range.
