Monica and her four children live in a shack on a hillside in a very intimidating area of Bertrams, Johannesburg.

I've taken photographs in some challenging places, but this was perhaps the worst room I've ever been in. It was totally disordered and ramshackle, as though in the aftermath of an explosion, and with clouds of flies. South Africa has been suffering a drought. Rain is necessary, but it will exacerbate an already impossible situation in that hut.
