...Vic on driving the Porsche 917 long tail #25 at Le Mans...
”In 1969 I really had to fight with Porsche to let me drive the new 917 at Le Mans. They thought the first one would last six or eight hours and was really only a test for the future. In 1970 the factory had made huge advances in the car and a “long tail” was the car to beat, but nobody except me wanted to drive it! 25 mph faster than the other 917s and Ferraris it needed absolute precision driving to get the best out of it but then rewarded the driver with outstanding performance. During practice for the 24 hours in 1970 I became the first driver ever to turn a lap at over 150 mph. And I did it again in the race!”
