La Défense ist ein modernes Hochhausviertel westlich von Paris im Département Hauts-de-Seine und gilt als Europas größte Bürostadt. Administrativ gesehen teilen sich die Städte Courbevoie, Nanterre und Puteaux das 160 Hektar große Gebiet.
Das mit einer 1,2 km langen und 250 m breiten Fußgängerzone durchzogene Viertel, dessen Planung 1955 begann, ist Sitz vieler Banken und Versicherungen. Beeindruckende Gebäude sind die Türme Areva, Manhattan, Tour Gan und Tour Total Coupole sowie die CNIT genannte ehemalige Messehalle, die heute teilweise als Hotel, teilweise als Geschäfts- und Kongresszentrum dient. Bekanntestes Gebäude des Viertels ist jedoch die Grande Arche, eine moderne Variante des Triumphbogens.

Around its Grande Arche and esplanade ("le Parvis"), La Défense contains many of the Paris urban area's tallest high-rises, and is home to no fewer than 1,500 corporate head offices, including those of 15 of the top 50 companies in the world.
