Wonderful photos, I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, North Hills and Northside and really miss it. There is no place like it. I have lived in the midwest longer than I ever wanted to and while the people are nice, it is just not the same. People in Pittsburgh get involved with thier neighbors, you knew everyone. Here half the time you may only know one family on the block.

I too would like to see Northside pictures. If you could get a few of the 1500 block of Superior AVe, that would be fantastic, my Gramma lived across the street from a huge church. I can close my eyes and hear those bells. There was a little store across the street, Nick Fec owned it.

Anyway, thanks for Pittsburgh on my computer.

I watched the bike race called "The Tour of Pennsylvania" just to see Pittsburgh during the race. I live near D.C doesnt come close. I'm originally from Aliquippa, Beaver County.

I've been livin in Cali for like 3 years now. Although Cali offers beautiful views and stuff, somehow I miss the cold city lifestyle of my hometown "PITTSBURGH PISTOL-VANIA"!!! I'll be home soon baby!

i'm born and raised in pittsburgh to ,but i live in LOS ANGELES CA. i've been out here for 2 in ahalf years and u talkin about home sick i'm home sick i watch the channel 4 wtae weather report on the net everyday thats pretty bad!!!

My husband and I were both born and raised in Pittsburgh. We live in Atlanta now and don't get back nearly often enough, but we have wonderful memories and love looking at your pictures. Our folks still live there. My Mom was telling me how wonderful this years First Night celebration was. She said she would love to have a picture of the city all lit up like that. Do you have any pictures or can you tell me where I might get pictures from First Night 2008? I would love to get her one as a gift. At 80 years old, she doesn't need many things. From the sound of her voice when she talked about this, I could tell that it was something she really wanted. I'm trying really hard to make her wish come true. Thanks for your help...and for the GREAT PICTURES. I may live in the South, but I am a steel city, Steelers-loving, Pittsburgh-girl at heart! Bobbie

i lived in pittsburgh in the early ninties as a ( P.I.A ) student from saudi arabia, i have known so many people during those years, i liked pittsburgh and i still do. thanks for bringing back the good old memories. i wish you could post some photos of the south park area and the the park place apartments , thats where i stayed. thanks again lou.

Great pictures of Pittsburgh. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and it's nice to catch up every once in awhile. I'm in Seattle now and wow was the Superbowl great last year!

Fourth-generation Pittsburgher. Everyone worked in the steel mills. My Dad was being groomed to run the Crucible Mill near Beaver when things started to go downhill. We were moved to Philadelphia, then to Syracuse, NY (which felt like Siberia) so Dad would still have a job. Dad's gone now, as is the world he lived in.

I've been back a few times--too few--and have found Pittsburghers to be the most kind, generous, unpretentious and just plain nice people I've found anywhere. Ask for directions--folks love to help! And nobody else knows what a gumband is.

The photos are beautiful. At the same time, all that gorgeous clean sparkling color makes me think back to when steel still ran the town; when the Bessemers blew flames into the sky and kids like me watched in wonder as slag was poured down the hillsides. The filth was everywhere--but so was the wealth and the pride.

Thanks for the pics, and for making me mighty homesick for a walk in Grandview at night (and a ride on the old Mon).

Hi Guys. I am John Hunt . Email jwhunt@owt.com. I was raised in Pittsburgh (Oakmont). Our Pittsburgh is truly, the most beautiful city anywhere. If one doesn't believe that, I challenge them to fly to Pittsburgh, rent a car, and drive through the For Pitt Tunnel to see the most spectacular view of their life. Mike, I was a LTC stationed in a hardship tour in Hawaii during our first four Superbowls. Lou, I have an " unusual "request. As a boy in Oakmont in 1950, I began the hobby of model railroading. I still do it now in Richland, WA. (The Seahawks were pretty good, but no match for the greatest. Even though I was in WA, I wore black and gold that day) For my railroad layout, I just purchased 4 (four) "Classic" building kits to construct and add to my layout. They are all buildings in or were in Pittsburgh! For authenticity, I need to know the colors of the buildings - a description or better yet, photos, so I can build true reproductions. The buildings are: 106 East Ohio Street ; 101 Grant Street; 105 Baum Blvd; and 102 Penn Avenue. Can you or someone provide me descriptions or better yet, photos, or tell me how to obtain them. Strange request? Not if you want to have a real Pittsburgh on your layout. Thanks and hope to hear from you . John

Born in Pittsburgh and I love it,from grade School to high school a mans city,be ready when you go out your door because anything can happen. a football city with class the Badest football high team was and still is ( THE HOUSE) 26 years of Kicking Butts, all in all its a wonderful Place, Pittsburgh the home of champions,Tony Liso, Tony Dorsett, JohnnyUnitas,Joe Montana. I now Live in north carolina, I will aways love "THE BURG".

Your photos of Pittsburgh are really great. Having grown up in the Washington DC area, a truly ecletic city if ever there was one..... I had a really difficult time in Pittsburgh. I have lived here for 5 years and I am getting ready to move to Naples Florida. Pittsburgh is by FAR the most prejudice place I have ever lived. I never heard the N word more and I never saw as many fights in bars and on the street as I have in Pittsburgh. The men have a lot of Testosterone here. Tough guys abound.

Lou -- You're probably right that Pittsburgh need not "explain itself" to anyone.

In response to the Guest comment, though, I would add the following. I'm a Pittsburgh native who joined the military shortly after we won our first four Super Bowls. In the past 25+ years, Uncle Sam has taken me an awful lot of places (not S. America or Antarctica, yet) and I've been in Europe for the last 4 or 5 years. In those many years, I've been to and lived in many big, exciting and exotic cities. I can honestly say, though, that I have never been anywhere that could compare to Pittsburgh in terms of 'soul' or 'humanity'. The Pittsburgh I grew up in and the Pittsburgh that has evolved since the decline of the steel industry are both phenomenal communities. From the enduring ethnic diversity to the comfortable mixing of residents all over the economic scale, Pittsburgh is a community of people that embodies the human soul and exudes humanity. The sonner I can come home, the better. And Vincent better not close up the shop before I move back.

Thank you so much for your beautiful pics of the 'burg. I'm from Edgewood/Swissvale and currently live in San Diego, CA and I miss home so much!! This is will be my 2nd Christmas out here in CA and I miss look & smell of winter (can you believe it?) Do you think you'll possibly post some pics of Pittsburgh in winter? I'd love to see that. Come to think of it pics of the 'burg during all the seasons would be awesome. I know it's a tall order, so maybe you could possibly throw in a Primanti sandwich & Aiello's pizza (in Squirrel Hill)!!

I really am impressed. I am from the Burgh, so the Pittsburgh pictures I find interesting, but it is some of your other work that really gave me chills. You have such an instinct. I guess that is how I can describe it. It is as if some of the pictures captured the objects or moments in time so perfectly that you feel present. Damb, thanks for the site. I a going to be in Pittsburgh early next month and because of your pictures I am so filled with excitement that I cannot hardly contain myself! I realize that I have been to a few beautiful places in my life but I feel that Pittsburgh just may be the city that wins the prize for beauty, excitement and atmosphere!

As a photographer myself I salute your municipal portrait gallery. The Live Cam - a very nice touch for us natives so far away. I've been marooned in California for over 30 years, and visit home when I can. Native of Lawrenceville.

P.S. You misspelled "Monongahela". Maybe I misspelled it too!

I tuned into this gallery because I grew up near Pittsburgh. I'm so glad I did! Your portrait of the city is wonderful. I especially like your technique of photographing skyscrapers, giving them a life of their own---one that their architects intended them to have. And then there is Point Park with the "all-important" stadium construction dominating---a very telling image! Thanks for Pittsburgh! Now I'll have to check out some of your other galleries.
