Walk Over to Tijuana Mexico

Didn't want to risk driving over without Mexican auto insurance so parked in San Ysidro and walked accross the border. Each photo describes the walk, perhaps the most shocking as within minutes you go from being in the united states to being in a third world country. The culture shock is instantaneous.

To me Tijuana has always been a reminder of how grateful we should be for what we have and is sad to see how people so close to us live.

If your planning on visiting Tijuana, the only advantage of driving over is if you plan to travel further into mexcio and/or to avoid the pollution on the way back. There are also several ways to fast track the standing wait on the way back. Cyclists are given priority and you can also catch a bus while in the line for about $1 which at least ensures you are sitting down rather than standing out in the heat made worse by all the pollution.

If your looking for Tequila, Cabo Wabo is a top choice and I found strangely that it was cheaper in the San Ysidro Duty Free Store than over in Tijuana. Reposado for $35 and Anejo for $50. While in Tijuana Corralejo is a very good choice and $20 or less with some bartering.

There are countless Taxi drivers trying to lure you into their Cabs as you enter Mexico. Really not nessasary as you can easily walk to downtown and some of the best prices are on this walk. As i found Taxi drivers are very knowledgeable in areas like controlled prescription drugs and how to obtain them.

Despite how dangerous people say Tijuana is at the end of the day it is a matter of you using common sense and logic and remaining alert and avoid taking any back streets.

Mexico is a relatively developed nation. What you call "shacks" are far better than the shacks you will find in much of the world.

Mexico -- nor Tijuana -- is decidedly NOT Third World, but rather high up in the 'Second World' (developing countries which nonetheless HAVE an infrastructure). You'll recognize the difference when you visit, say, Bangladesh or similar. Still, the point is well-made that we are, indeed, lucky to live in the U.S.
Tijuana is a city of almost 1.3 million people. The border district isn't its best foot. Ordinary Tijuana citizens rarely go there. Judging the city, or the country, by what one sees there is like judging how Las Vegans live by your impression of The Strip, or New Yorkers by Times Square.
